Defensive ends don't always like Chris Jones' philosophy.
Ricky Foley, Shawn Lemon, Odell Willis, Justin Capicciotti and Jonathan Newsome are among the CFL players who have complained about Jones' notion that defensive ends can't just pass-rush opposing quarterbacks. Jones wants his defensive ends to occasionally drop into pass-coverage. Most defensive ends aren't very adept at pass coverage, so they complain about the assignment.
It's fair to presume Newsome's unhappiness was part of the disagreement that convinced Jones to cut the former NFLer. Newsome got dumped three days after intercepting a pass in Saskatchewan's 43-40, home-opening loss to Winnipeg. More was expected from Newsome after he joined the Riders in 2016, so he's now joined the hundreds of players who have whirled through Saskatchewan since Jones arrived last year.
Newsome, however, should note that despite their unhappiness, Foley won a Grey Cup while playing in Jones' defence. And so did Willis.
